No, google itself has NOT provided such specific instruction (although they did send a warning about a month ago that all apps would have to switch to 2-step verification by June). If you have some difficulty finding the correct procedure, let us know and we can direct you to specific links. The full procedure for that has been posted both in this subreddit and in a few YouTube videos. You need to enable 2-step verification and then add an app password. Is anyone else having problems connecting with whatever mail app you're using? Thunderbird just keeps getting the username and password incorrect error. I tried re-entering my username and password in Thunderbird and that had no effect. I compared them to Google's instructions for setting up POP and my settings are identical to their instructions. I double-checked all of my server settings in Thunderbird and they are exactly what they have always been. My username has not changed, my password has not changed, nothing is different. I checked the POP settings in gmail and everything is fine, exactly the same as it has been for years. I go to gmail in my browser and login with no problem.

It says the username and password are not correct. I use Thunderbird to check my gmail via POP and send email via SMTP.

I have not changed anything on my machine or network.
